Book Description:  Will Annette's search for love and acceptance replace the loss and hurt in her heart? Find out in Janine Mendenhall's book one, Starving Hearts, of the Triangular Trade Trilogy. Since her assault, Miss Annette Chetwynd has been plagued by nightmares and worries about an arranged marriage. But she yearns to find her anonymous rescuer. Unfortunately, her health and intellect prevent it. Both repel suitors and cause Annette to doubt God’s existence, at least until He answers her prayers in an unusual way. . . .

My thoughts: Starving Hearts turned out to be a different book than I expected.  That in itself is not a bad thing.  I always like to be surprised by a book and where the author will take me.

This book is Christian Fiction.  The male protagonist, Peter, wants to be a member of the clergy.  He is a good man who happens to live in a family of people with flaws.  His goal is to be married to a good fearing woman.  He thinks he knows who it will be, until she marries his older brother.

Annette is the female MC.  She does not know if she has faith in God.  She was attacked and her mother covered up the ordeal to suit her own purposes.  Her thoughts on deity change as she learns of Peter and begins to admire him.

The reader knows from the beginning who the antagonist is.  He is a very bad guy who thrills on using people.  He is in the slave trade and has little to no conscience.  His plans remain hidden through most of the book until he acts.  He adds some interesting twists and turns to the plot.

Overall, I thought the book had many great things happening.  The author had unexpected events that added interest.  I had a hard time relating to the characters.  They were likable, I just wasn't invested in their story.  The book seemed a little slow in pacing.

This is the author's debut novel.  I applaud the work that she accomplished and look forward to seeing what she will do in the future.
