Book Review ~ "Bright Blue Miracle" by Becca Wilhite

Bright Blue MiracleBright Blue Miracle by Becca Wilhite
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Source: I purchased this one!
Genre: Contemporary YA

Book Description: Seventeen-year-old Leigh Mason is not sure she's ready to share her mom, her bedroom, and her little sisters with her new stepsister, Betsy. And she's definitely not ready to share her best friend, who happens to be a boy! Coping with a blended family is not easy for either Leigh or Betsy, especially during their senior year in high school. Each step brings them nearer to a crisis that will either send them running in different directions or bind them firmly together (which, let's face it, would take a miracle).Bright Blue Miracle is a new young adult novel that has everything a girl wants: a hero (more specifically, a really cute boy), a villain (who happens to be a stepsister), comedy, despair, pedicures, ice cream, love, hate, tennis, revenge, and, of course, a couple of surprises that might send you for some tissues.

My thoughts: This book has sat on my shelf for quite a while. I kept looking at it and look forward to the day when I would find a spare day or two to read it. I loved Becca Wilhite's book, My Ridiculous, Romantic Obsessions.

This story is very different from the other. This book is not as much a comedy as a coming of age story. Leigh is seventeen. She has faced crisis that would be hard for someone older and more mature. She has weathered the storms and now is facing one of the hardest yet, her mother is getting married and she will have a step-sister. She feels as if her father's memory is being betrayed.

This book deals with hard situations. Unfortunately, many youth face similar trials. The book looks at blended families, death, love, jealousy, acceptance, and sickness. It seemed a little weird that Leigh's best friend becomes Betsy's (the step-sister) boyfriend. Becca Wilhite is able to make an awkward situation work and it did add a layer of depth to the story.  I really liked that even though it was written from Leigh's point of view, you could capture the feelings of the other character's.  I loved that Leigh learned hard lessons that brought her a greater understanding of her place in the family and the way that attitude can lighten or darken her life.

The writing is engaging and is well paced. This is another great story from Becca. I look forward to reading more from her in the future.
