Genre: YA Romance

Book description:  Aria's life is full of secrets--secrets about her mother's death, her father's cruelty, and her
dream to go to Juilliard. When Aria meets Thomas, he draws out her secrets, captures her
heart, and gives her the courage to defy her father. But when tragedy strikes and Thomas
disappears, Aria is left alone to transform her broken heart's melody into something
beautiful. Porcelain Keys is a captivating love story that will resonate long after the last
page is turned.

My thoughts: Porcelain Keys is a book that explores the life of a Aria. Aria is a young lady of strong character. She has several heartbreaking events that have formed her into a person that was easy to relate to and like.

As the story begins, Aria's mother has passed away. Her father, in his grief, has become an alcoholic and abusive. He doesn't let Aria explore her talent with the piano. It is her connection to her mother, and it is painful for her to not play. She is gifted musically. Her goal is to attend Juilliard, just as her mother did.

She finds comfort with the boy who moved in next door. He is there for a short time, but he encourages her to be true to her talent. He is compassionate and helpful in dealing with her father. Tragedy follows the two of them and pulls them closer as it also tears them apart.

I love the use of music in this book. I loved how Sarah Beard brought out the emotion in music. A master musician feels the emotion of the song and is able to express it so that the listener can feel it. My dad used to say that he could always tell my mood, by the way that I played my violin.

The title of the book also tells has a deep meaning to the story. The Porcelain keys on a piano are a tool to create music, but porcelain is breakable, fragile. But they can be replaced and the music will flow just as beautifully as it did before. The human spirit can be broken, but life goes on and can be lived fully.

This book is beautifully written. It deals with some sensitive subjects. I would recommend to readers 16 plus, unless a parent reads it first to determine if it is appropriate for their child.
